The Algarve
The Algarve holds a special spirit of Portugal, the sun and sea are obvious attraction of the region, but the people make this a very hospitable and welcoming area; one which you will want to visit time and time again.

The Algarve is the southern region of Portugal. It runs from the Atlantic Ocean in the West to the Spanish border in the East. Famous for its beautiful beaches, some long and flat others tiny coves flanked by high cliffs, the Algarve is a popular tourist destination catering for all types of holidaymaker.
There are almost 30 golf courses in the Algarve most within one hour's drive of the airport at Faro, and tennis and water sports are also very popular. The Algarve is famous for its food and wines. The restaurants offer a good selection of typical Portuguese fare, together with international cuisine to suit all tastes and budgets.

The local communities are basically farmers and fishermen so markets brimming with fresh local produce are a must for those wishing to experience the real tastes of Portugal. Almonds, figs, olives, oranges and lemons are all grown locally and many delicacies made of these combined with honey are available in the shops. For the souvenir hunter, items made of cork, pewter and pottery are popular. Also leather goods especially shoes, bags and coats are good value.
The currency is the Euro and cash point machines are widely available in all towns. UK bank and credit cards are also acceptable in most establishments in Portugal, though some smaller shops, restaurants and bars in rural areas may only accept cash. The climate is moderate with hot sunshine in the summer months tempered by cooling breezes from the ocean, while the temperatures during spring and autumn are generally a good deal higher than those in the UK. During the winter months of December and January the nights can be quite cold, but in the daytime, the sunshine is often surprisingly warm. In general the Algarve offers a good overall holiday destination which brings many people back year after year.
